How do we feel about this coffee

A Kenyan from Costa Rica?!? This super coffee is the best of two origins. It’s reminiscent of a Kenyan style of coffee, with a vibrant acidity from the SL 28. Still, because it’s grown in the West Valley in Costa Rica and processed via the yellow honey method, there is so much rich depth and layers to the sweetness!! It feels deeply rich, creamy and sweet, showcases like fresh apricots, a golden delicious apple sprinkled with honey and a homemade Dulce de Leche on the finish.

Coffee Story
This yellow honey-processed SL 28 variety comes from producer Ricardo Perez’s' farm Santa Lucia. It is processed at his family-owned micro-mill, Helsar de Zarcero, which we have worked with for over nine years. The trees were planted about five years ago, and this is the third harvest that Ricardo has gotten from them and our second year purchasing!!

Once harvested, this coffee goes through a centrifugal washer that spins the mucilage off the bean allowing control over the amount of fruit or “honey” left on the seed during the drying phase of processing. The yellow honey leaves approx 25 to 50% of the fruit mucilage or honey during fermentation.

Against popular opinion

$35 dollar bag, super series, small batch, honey process, hallmarks of what should be a terrific brew.

No distinct fruitiness smell. Post brew nose is hallmark medium roast. Sadly, it just tastes pedestrian. The fruit notes that exist come through initially and are quickly overshadowed by med roast coffee taste, and aftertaste, typical of caturra variety.

I'm a huge fan of fruity and vibrant beans and these beans ain't it. Brewed in v60, Switch and Chemex, using Fellow Ode v2 grinder, using Kasuya and dilution methods.

If you want a punchy fruity bean that's juicy with beautiful nose, there are much better options at this price point.

One of the best coffees this year.

Costa Rica Santa Lucia SL 28 Kenia is a entry for the record books as my top coffee so far this year.

Impossible to make a bad coffee with a freshly ground batch no matter what the method: Hario V60, Nanopresso or AeroPress!
