Las Tolas is an interesting producing region located in Northern Ecuador a few hours north of Quito in the department of Pichincha. French agronomist, Arnaud Causse planted a couple dozen hectares of his favourite varieties here over 10 years ago because it was the only valley in the area with enough break in the clouds to provide the perfect amount of sunlight needed for coffee production. According to Arnaud, Las Tolas also had the perfect terroir for coffee with an outstanding altitude, fertile volcanic soils, and a great annual rainfall. We cupped both of Arnaud’s 2018 harvests of bourbon and caturra this year and chose the caturra. It was super unique with lots of sweet florals and vanilla in the aromatics that lead to a round body, citrus -like acidity and notes of papaya and hazelnut.
