Coffee Story
This year's Holiday blend combines Kenya Mutira, a vibrant and winey-washed coffee. And a layered and sweet, fruit-forward, naturally processed regional blend from Honduras called Cabanas from the Santa Barbara region.
Kenya Mutira
Mutira is grown in the infamous Kirinyaga County in the central region of Kenya by various smallholder producers and delivered to the Mutira Cooperative at the base of Mount Kenya. Their factories were built in the 1960s after the cooperative was formed in 1951. The cooperative comprises Mutitu, Kagumo, Ngorano, Mugaya, Karii, Kiangundu and Kiamutira member factories located at the Kagumo factory. This specific lot is a blend of SL 34, 28, Ruiru 11 and Batian and is hand selected and, harvested and delivered to the farmers' wet mills the same day. Once delivered to the station, the cherry is sorted, goes through the pulping, fermenting, and washing process, and is closely supervised before the parchment is moved to the drying tables for slow sun-drying on the famous African beds.
Honduras Cabanas Natural
Honduras Cabanas Los Planes is grown close to Los Planes in La Paz by farmers cultivating coffees and contributing them to the Cabanas Rise Series. The lot is a field blend of mostly Lempira, Catuai and Pache. It is washed and dried on raised African-style beds and circulated every 30 minutes for 15 days to ensure proper drying. The Cabanas Rise Series project is an effort to support smaller producing communities in their quest to improve coffee quality by purchasing larger volumes at premium prices. The series is a joint effort between our partner importer, Collaborative Coffee and the Paz family's Beneficio San Vicente in Honduras. The goal is to help these up-and-coming farmers in the Cabanas region by providing milling & logistic services and working with farmers on new strategies to improve farm-level practices and cup quality.
