Ruarai, KenyaDetour Coffee Roasters
A fruity and jam-like profile with berry-like aromatics leading to a juicy texture and vibrant flavours of raspberry, white grape and apricot jam.
Named for its place along the Ruarai River, in the famous Nyeri Region, this coffee is grown by 600 members of the Ruthaka Farmers Cooperative delivering coffee cherries to the Ruarai Factory washing station. The area has a rich volcanic soil where the farms all grow a blend of SL 28, SL 34, Ruiru 11 and Batian varieties with a slow maturation rate at an altitude of 1800 MASL. Ruarai means "a place of rocks," paying homage to the rocks flowing in the river that is pushed through fallows for fermenting. After de-pulped and sorted for density, the coffees are fermented for 16 to 24 hrs before being washed and soaked in the Ruarai river for 16 to 18 hours, then dried on raised beds for 21 days.
