Giving Back - Holiday Blend Donations

This holiday season, Detour will be donating $1 for every bag of Holiday Blend purchased in-store or online. For every Holiday Gift Set (mug and bag of Holiday blend) purchased in-store or online Detour will donate $5.

There are many amazing things happening in Hamilton, and this season we want to shine a light on a social enterprise in the downtown core of the city that we believe is significantly impacting its community. It’s a registered charity but it’s changing the way in which we understand what charity looks like.

541 Eatery and Exchange

Now two and half years old, 541 Eatery & Exchange is a restaurant that truly benefits its neighbourhood in tangible ways. All meals are crafted in house and are both healthy and delicious. The best thing? They are affordable, all menu items are priced at $5 and under. Want a cup of coffee? For a $1 you can purchase a great cup.

The café offers its customers a way to give back as well. At the front counter sits a jar of buttons that represent currency. For every $1 you can purchase 1 button. Purchased buttons can be used by others to pay for their meal up to a maximum of 5 buttons.

Daily operations are almost entirely run by a large volunteer base, many of whom are also regular patrons of the space.

Proceeds from sales are directed towards community initiatives, like homework help groups, music lessons, youth employment programs and other skills training programs.

This past summer the restaurant introduced their community Garden. They took their parking lot and turned it into an urban farm to give their volunteers and neighbours an opportunity to get their hands dirty! All the food grown was turned into delicious as well as affordable meals in the kitchen.

Located in the Barton Street neighbourhood, 541 has become a hub where folks come and gather to eat, where your background and socio-economic circumstance do not matter and where you are welcomed warmly. Empowering local residents is central to their mandate and it is breathing life into an area of that city that in recent years had been neglected.

Help us give back to this amazing venture and enjoy some delicious Detour brew at the same time!

Happy Holidays!
