As the spring begins we are seeing old favourites return. Ethiopian Yergacheffe Kochere and Guatemala Limonar are making their return and it's no coincidence that these are two favourites with many of you.
Making it's official debut this week on the shelf is Guatemala El Limonar, the coffee that I used last year to win the Regional Barista Competition and place 5th overall in Canada. Its as good or better than last year with silky milk chocolate notes highlighted with bright raspberry and finishing with honey sweetness.
Returning shortly will be the Ethiopian Yergacheffe Kochere and another, slightly more floral Yergacheffe sourced through the Ethiopian Commodities Exchange (ECX). As much as we love to have maximum tracibility with our coffees we couldn't pass up this lot of Yergacheffe as it jumped off the cupping table with big sweet floral and bergamont notes which lead into lemongrass and juicy citrus. An awesome coffee, especially in the summer.
The Kochere will also return and is very similar to last years crop. It has an excellent mix of floral and candied orange with a caramel sweetness.
Both of these are awesome coffees and we can't wait until they arrive.
We now have a lot of Hario coffee equipment back in stock along with Aeropress', Chemex's and filters for all. We will also soon be carrying Bonavita brewers which meet the specifications of the Specialty Coffee Association of America and Europe for brewing at proper temperature.
WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO
Kaelin, Crystal and I recently travelled to the annual SCAA coffee event in Portland, a giant mix between trade show and conference, where we spent 4 days surrounded by the worlds most involved coffee people.
The trip was packed full of interesting and exciting experiences and some highlights included cuppings with producers, roasting demonstrations and watching the USBC, US Brewers Cup and the US Cup Tasters Championship. It also gave us a chance to speak with people from all over the industry and learn from the best.
One particular highlight for me was cupping coffees with some producers and their coffees from Costa Rica, Panama and El Salvador. Kaelin and I discovered a few gems and although they won't arrive for a few months, we are very excited about these coffees.
And of course, we had a blast in Portland which is an amazing city. Every corner you turn reveals another incredible restaurant or bar or micro brewery or roastery or cafe. We didn't go without good food or drink and it could have stayed that way a lot longer!
We are excited for patio season to begin again at the cafe. Come on in for an iced coffee or tea, a sandwich and soak up some sun.
